Cotton: uses and advantages in the international market

The first referencesHistorical references to cotton are from India, dating back to the 7th century BC, in addition to there being records of its use by other ancient civilizations, such as in Peru, Egypt, and in the manufacture of hammocks by the indigenous populations of pre-Columbian America. It had its introduction in Europe by the Arab communities and is of great importance in the current world market for the generation of jobs and for representing 40% of the fiber trade.

Product utility

Its main use is in textile production, such as clothing, towels, yarn, handicrafts, hygiene products and fabrics in general. In addition, cotton is also found in fishing nets, coffee filters, tents and even in the manufacture of explosives, animal feed and the production of vegetable oil from its residues and seeds. Furthermore, an interesting fact is the existence of naturally colored cotton, depending on the region of cultivation.

World market and cotton

The international demand for the product has gradually increased each year, showing an annual growth of 2%, according to data from the Brazilian Association of Cotton Producers (ABRAPA) . This is due to the versatility of cotton uses, in addition to being required worldwide. In addition, the country with the highest current cotton production is India, with China being the largest consumer of the product.

Cotton in Brazil

Cotton represents one of the main agricultural products in Brazil, with Mato Grosso and Bahia being the regions with the highest production. The preference of these states is due, mainly, to the climate of these areas, in addition to the availability of large extensions of soil for planting. Furthermore, approximately 50% of the national production is destined for export, with the main buyers being Indonesia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Pakistan and China.

High forecast in 2023

The expectation of cotton for 2023 is high, an example of which is Brazil's goal of being the largest exporter of the product this year. In addition, data from ABRAPA estimate an 18% growth in Brazilian production for 2023, possibly reaching 2.946 million tons of lint. Therefore, with the growth of the cotton market, both in the internal and external markets, it is possible to conclude that it is a very advantageous business.

However, despite the estimate of a favorable year for cotton, it is necessary to emphasize the importance of consulting to enter this market, in order to have assistance in relation to bureaucracy, export destinations and decision-making._cc781905-5cde-3194- bb3b-136bad5cf58d_
