    Nowadays, it is very common to have a few slices of sweet yellow melon for breakfast in Brazil, however, there are records of their plantations in Egypt and Iran from around 2,500 BC The first melon seeds arrived in America along with the ships by Cristóvão Colombo, starting to be commercialized in Brazil a few decades later.

Export favoring due to trade agreements

    Despite its historical roots, Brazil has now gone from an importer of European melons to an exporter. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, in 2019, 250,000 tons of melon were exported to several countries, mainly to China, after a bilateral agreement made by both through the BRICS. With that, we reached a very important milestone, after the opening of the Chinese market, being the first country to import melons to China. With this in mind, producers hope to double their sales, capturing at least 1% of the market.

    According to Embrapa, the largest producing states are: Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Bahia, Rio Grande do Sul and Pernambuco, which shows a clear predominance of the Northeast, coming in accordance with the semiarid regions, providing a favorable environment for the growth of its trees between 2.1 to 2.4 meters in height, large and round leaves, with fruit weighing 1 to 4 kilos, which bear fruit on average 50 to 65 days after planting.  

Plantations adaptable to the Brazilian climate

   With this in mind, there are numerous ways to export melon, for example, the fresh fruit generated US $116.95 million only with the crops coming from Rio Grande do Norte in 2019, according to the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply of Brazil, Tereza Cristina. In addition, currently the field of pulp exports is extremely fertile, considering that currently only in Ceará there are 148 companies focused on this market, according to data from the Research Observatory of FIEC (Federation of Industries of the State of Ceará). Aside from the fact that the increase in the number of Chinese imports of melon is linked to the fruit's space in local cuisine and medicine, the leaves are used as bases for healing teas and compresses for wounds on the skin.
