  • Increase of 18.2% Var. Jan-Aug 2021/2020;

Molasses as a national culture

      Cane molasses, a by-product of sugarcane, was created during the colonial period in Brazil and can be considered a culinary wealth. Multifunctional, it can be consumed with fruits, cereals, milk or pure, as a natural sweetener option rich in iron, calcium, magnesium and copper, in addition to having antioxidant properties.

      April 2021 was a historic milestone in Brazilian foreign trade, with a surplus of US$ 10.3 billion according to data from the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex), of the Ministry of Economy. The third most significant increase in exports occurred in the Manufacturing Industry (US$11.66 billion, 43.9% increase) and it can be said that molasses contributed strongly to the extremely positive results. In the same period, Brazil exported 1.904 million tons of molasses, indicating a percentage increase of 25.67% in relation to the same month of the previous year, according to data from the Ministry of Economy.

      The prospect of export viability of this product has been optimistic since March 2020, when the historical series of molasses exports (in US$ FOB value) started to grow, according to data from Comex Stat. According to the same source, molasses exports ranked 4th in the ranking of total exports in the 1st half of 2021, demonstrating the product's robust presence in the overall balance of Brazilian exports.

      It is clear that the molasses market is safe and reliable, as can be seen even in an extremely complex scenario and uncertain, like the pandemic. It is a reliable product in the short term and with long-term potential, deserving prominence and attention as it is viable to be exported safely.
