Pineapple and its investment in the market

Pineapple is cultivated in all Brazilian states, on approximately 68,150 hectares. Brazil is the second world producer of the fruit, with 2.69 million tons. Regarding the domestic market, the fruit is the fifth most produced in the country, and contributes approximately R$ 2.22 billion to the agricultural GDP. The characteristics of pineapple, such as its flavor and aroma, make it highly appreciated in several regions, including importing countries, in addition to the fact that it can be used in different ways to manufacture various products.

The variety in the use of pineapple

The pineapple fruit can be consumed fresh or industrialized, and its pulp is energetic and contains vitamins A, B1 and C. Both in Brazil and abroad, the main industrialized products are fruit in syrup and pasteurized juice, in addition to the production of jellies. Furthermore, industrialization residues are widely used in animal feed, in addition to being viable for the production of alcohol for pharmaceutical use, wines, citric acid, vinegar, commercial starch and obtaining fibers from the fruit leaves, which demonstrates the variety of areas in which this product can be inserted in the market.

Specifics to carry out the export

Thus, for investors and pineapple producers, it is necessary to choose the pineapple variety, considering the destination of the production (in natura consumption or industrial ), with the best-known cultivars in Brazil: Pérola or Branco de Pernambuco, Smooth Cayenne and Jupi. Furthermore, the crop cycle has up to two fruiting periods: the first between one year and a half and one year and eight months, and the second within two and a half years. Therefore, despite its relatively short duration, attention should be paid to the necessary investments.

The investment in pineapple

These investments, despite being quite high, mainly in irrigated crops, which have been shown to be useful despite the relative tolerance of the fruit to the dry period, must consider the return of this broad market, which usually occurs after the first pineapple cycle. In addition, among the production investments, the use of cardboard or wooden packaging for the transport of pineapple products can be considered, which even though they are still restricted in Brazil, reduce losses, which fall to rates lower than 1%, and offset the cost of packaging.
