Tobacco: A grand market in the midst of the pandemic

    Tobacco is a processed product that is present in people's daily lives in different ways, the main one being,  for recreation, in the form of cigarettes, cigars and pipes. Little is known that, in addition to being used for this purpose, it can be used in the production of homemade insecticides. Recreational use is by far the most popular of the product. According to data collected by the World Health Organization, in surveys carried out with 24 countries around the world.  

 

The importance of Brazil in this market

    Brazil is currently the second largest tobacco exporter in the world, just behind China, which is the largest producer and consumer. 675,545 tons of the herb are produced per year in the Brazilian territory, and its export represents 25% of sales of the product on the planet, according to a survey carried out by the company Souza Cruz. Mainly present in the south, concentrated in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná, it is cultivated in 321,520 hectares of Brazilian territory, generating income for more than 600 thousand people in the country.

 

    According to the Solidarity Research Network, in 2020, despite the coronavirus pandemic harming several segments of international trade, low-complexity products maintained a stable level of exports in Brazil, and the number of exports of such products was only lower than the same period in 2019 for two months of 2020, in January and May. In this sense, tobacco exports earned the country, in 2020 alone, $651,946,793.00 according to the Comexstat website, with Belgium as its main destination, due to its vast use of cigars and the like, followed by China, States United States and Indonesia.
